RNL, in a design/build team with Hensel Phelps, prepared this design as part of a US Army Corps of Engineers SATO SATO C competition. Our proposal features an integrated building complex which includes a two-story component housing the Administrative and Small Battalion program functions; one designed to house all classrooms on the first level and a stand alone entry capability; and a SCIF/BOC/NO C facility. The facility is designed to meet Anti-Terrorism Force Protection (ATATFP) standards and to meet LEED Gold Certification.
The arrangement of the three building scheme results in a common use, enclosed courtyard with natural daylighting and landscaped features. The buildings along with the entry lobby and connecting stair, form the enclosure for the courtyard. In addition to the classroom volume, there is a site enclosure that provides covered seating which holds back a bermed landscape treatment.
The courtyard is designed to provide a collegial gathering space away from the normal circulation corridors when classes are dismissed or on intermediate breaks in training sessions. Convenient, yet distinct access to the courtyard has been provided from each separated building element of the facility. The courtyard space also provides a separation for the administration spaces on the first floor to gain access to natural daylight, as well as provide them a view into the courtyard space.
