RNL worked Colorado Springs Utilities to identify and create a consolidation program that integrated two existing labs, removing duplicate functions, simplifying operations, and reducing overhead. The result was the new Environmental Services Laboratory, the first LEED Silver Laboratory in Colorado.
The architecture of the building is derived from both functional lab requirements and sustainable design objectives. The building is long and slim with a three-story light well bisecting the long axis. This design supports the functional requirements of the labs and also allows day light deep into the building. The labs have windows for daylighting and views as well as ample wall space for lab casework.
The building site includes a visitor courtyard with parking and an outdoor employee area screened with native greenery. The south parking lot features water treatment ponds in lieu of median islands, planted with cottonwood trees that provide natural water treatment. All landscaping is irrigated with gray water provided by the adjacent water treatment plant. Other sustainable features include alternative transportation, increased energy efficiency through systems and reduced solar gain, local/regional materials (architectural precast) as well as daylighting.
