RNL Master Planned, Programmed and Implemented the first phase of development for the Glendale Community College North (GCCN) Campus. The natural setting of the GCCN Campus site is an undeveloped 75 acre site with spectacular indigenous desert vegetation bisected diagonally by an arroyo that enters the site from the northeast corner and exits at the southwest corner. This natural drainage system is populated with mature ironwood and mesquite trees and forms a relatively lush green space that will be respected for the future campus development and will serve as an informal central mall to encourage pedestrian interaction.

RNL master planned the overall campus to be implemented in 4 phases. The initial construction phase was thoughtfully planned to easily and economically accommodate the remaining 3 phases in respect to utility infrastructure, roadways and building expansion. The total build-out of the GCCN campus is planned to accommodate a student population of over 10,000 FTE at 340,000 gsf.

The design team endeavored to create a desert campus that respects the Arizona climate and celebrates the student’s educational experience. The campus buildings purposely sets low and lightly on the natural desert floor, minimizing the impact to the existing vegetation and grades; preserving as much of the existing desert as possible. Student spaces open up and out onto the natural arroyo as well as north to Ludden Mountain.
