University Physicians Healthcare (UPH) departments were located at three different sites and their vision was to relocate to a 112,000 sf campus consisting of four buildings. The first programming and design phase consisted of 77,000 sf for three buildings and a new landscaped courtyard to be shared among the facilities.
The team approached the design concept of this project with the objective to create a comfortable welcoming working atmosphere that employees will enjoy. With the beautiful natural Sonoran desert as inspiration, a new landscaped courtyard incorporates views of the distant Catalina Mountains into the office spaces. 120 -degree workstations create visual interest into the rigid open office space. Private office pods are shifted in plan to form a canyon like space creating interaction break-out spaces for employees. The canyon concept is interpreted into all interior architectural elements including: floating ceiling planes; lighting; floor patterns; and furniture. Color schemes and carpet patterns imply a desert icon identity for each building. The East building icon is the Saguaro—shades of natural green. The South building icon is the Agave - varying shades of aqua blue with angular patterns to emphasize blades. The West building icon is the Chaparral Sage—using varying shades of purple with the free-flowing pattern of the branches represented in the carpet pattern.
