When Xcel Energy decided to consolidate their existing office spaces into one location, RNL provided test-fits for a number of buildings. Ultimately, Xcel Energy chose 1800 Larimer, the first LEED-CS Platinum high-rise building in Denver, because of its flexible floor plates, availability of contiguous space, and most importantly, the LEED Platinum status. In addition to designing this landmark office building, RNL was also selected by Xcel Energy to design the LEED-CI Platinum interiors for their new regional headquarters. The design team provided extensive programming to improve adjacencies and maximize the stack-plan for the 14 floors.

Deriving inspiration from Xcel Energy’s commitment to sustainability, their tag line “responsible by nature,” as well as the energy service they provide, the team developed the design concept of “energy in balance” which speaks to both the motion of energy and the balance of having good stewardship for the environment. The space celebrates the positive strides Xcel Energy is taking with renewable energy sources by incorporating large scale graphics and art installations to depict those renewables. Through the use of innovative green materials, recycling areas, and user controllability of the HVAC system, the space encourages people to think about their individual impact on the environment. Other key factors that drove the design include the need for flexibility, more collaborative zones, and employee attraction and retention.
