Tasked with designing a progressive work environment that would grab the attention of employees both present and potential, RNL took advantage of the open volume of a vacant Circuit City building to serve as expansion space for Google. The exterior walls were opened up with energy efficient glazing and the roof was designed with several daylight-capturing Solatube skylights in order to brighten up the workspace. A large tipi and a vintage VW bus were introduced into the space and have become the favorite spots for informal meetings.
Google’s philosophy is that each of their offices are uniquely designed to capture the spirit of the local culture while incorporating the collaborative and amenity spaces that make Google extremely successful at recruiting top talent. Brightly colored climbing ropes are used throughout the space to form team areas and break up the large volume in an creative way. Large scale outdoor photography, cedar siding mixed with beetle kill pine, and wall hung interior planters also reinforce the Boulder community’s active outdoor lifestyle. Green design is a high priority for Google and so the new space was designed to be extremely energy efficient, and with a LEED Gold certification, is a showcase for Google in the Rocky Mountain region.
